Winter 2006

The Year in Review

Everyone usually takes a look back at the year past in this month of December, so we’ll do just that by giving you a sampler which presents some events of interest to us Carmelites at ICS Publications.

January

The Centenary lecture series of Carmelite Spirituality began with a talk on “Saving Private Herman, Br. Lawrence“  given by Marc Foley, O.C.D. at the John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C.   (See the entry for “October and November” below for another angle to this series.)

This painting was donated by the Philadelphia Carmel to the John Paul II Cultural Center, where it now graces its chapel.

June

The Catholic Press Association gives ICS Publications a 3rd place award for its Study Edition of St. Therese's Story of a Soul complied by Fr. Marc Foley, O.C.D.   The category was “Soft Covered Spirituality Books.”

September

Three new volumes are issued by ICS Publications.  A variety of themes and authors now appear in our catalogue and elsewhere on this website:  the Heirs of St. Teresa of Avila, St. Teresa Margaret Redi, and Saint Edith Stein.

September

The pope blessed a statue of St. Edith Stein in a niche on the outside of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

October and November

A cluster of lectures took note of the Centenary of Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity underway since Trinity Sunday earlier this year.

The speakers were Fathers Kieran Kavanaugh and Daniel Chowning.  We place here a photo of Fr. Kieran.  It is a portrait that will appear in a volume of essays due out in 2007 to honor his 75th birthday and 50th anniversary of ordination.

November

The Institute of Carmelite Studies convened at the motherhouse of the Province they serve, at Holy Hill, Wisconsin.  This meeting also marked the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Institute by the Washington Province of Discalced Carmelites.
