Spring 2008
Take the word "funny" to mean surprising and you have the gist of this news item. The elections of our friars every three years include a call for a new Provincial. This time the votes indicated Fr. John Sullivan, your editor of these News Notes, was the one a majority felt ought to serve in that capacity.
As the Washington Province has always looked to younger men for its leadership one would have thought the discernment would point in another direction. Now, approaching 66 when I take office in May, I might very well be the oldest person elected to the post of regional superior of five houses of friars in the northeastern States and a house in Nairobi, Kenya, including other folks who are associated with our Province. Please direct your prayers toward us all in the Washington Province, so we can carefully detect the promptings of the Spirit at this juncture in our history together. The new position for me involves moving to another part of the United States and passing on direction of ICS and its publishing organ ICS Publications to other qualified religious. Look for news of a "change of the guard" sometime in the fall once new assignments are usually determined in our midst. (This will also mean I "sign off" now from my News Notes feature. It has been a pleasure creating this occasional communication service about what we are doing to spread Carmel's heritage through our publications.) To the Provincial Chapter, which signals the beginning of a new triennium and of a new provincial administration, we of ICS Publications were happy to draft a report that opened with the following words that will serve as a reminder to you of our efforts between 2005 and 2008:
Persons reading catalogues of religious, and sometimes non-religious, publishers can note that literature about St. Teresa of Avila is on an upswing. Years ago the man who is now Archbishop of Canterbury, V. Rev. Rowan Williams, wrote a book about her. ICS Publications is expecting delivery of a succinct exploration of St. Teresa's Interior Castle by Dr. Susan Muto, and we are pleased to give here a foretaste of what you can read if you purchase a copy. After listing the Table of Contents we will conclude this notice with a reproduction of the cover art work. It is taken from an original woodcut created by our sisters the Carmelite Nuns of Flemington, NJ back in 1982 for the fourth centenary of the death of St. Teresa. CONTENTS
