As the next part of our Lenten sale, we’re offering a wonderful book: St. Teresa of Avila: 100 Themes on Her Life and Work. Written by the acclaimed Spanish Teresian scholar Father Tomas Alvarez, OCD, it was translated by Father Kieran Kavanaugh, OCD, considered the foremost English-speaking expert on St. Teresa.
100 Themes is a veritable encyclopedia on Teresa’s world, including sections on her family and education, key people in her life, 16th- century Spanish culture and class structure, what Teresa read and wrote, and much more—all filled with fascinating glimpses into this great saint’s life and times.
St. Teresa was known for being somewhat impulsive at times, and we have to confess that ICS Publications was, too, in preparing 100 Themes. We feel that Father David Centner, OCD explained it well in his review of St. Teresa of Avila: 100 Themes on Her Life and Work:
Spanish Carmelite Friar Fr. Tomas de la Cruz Alvarez is probably the world's foremost expert on St. Teresa of Jesus of Avila. Over the years he has prepared critical editions of her manuscripts, prepared photocopies of her manuscripts, and written many scholarly works that are considered fundamental for understanding her doctrine. He was one of the experts who contributed to the Saint receiving the title of Doctor of the Church, the first woman on whom it was bestowed, over forty years ago. He has taught Teresian studies since the sixties.
In this recent work, he distills basic information and insights on this fascinating and profound friend of God. This book was translated by Carmelite Kieran Kavanaugh, who dedicated 40 years of his life to bringing out the Complete Works and all the letters of St. Teresa in English.
Unfortunately, this book sometimes does not read like idiomatic English, and it shows signs of haste in preparation. Furthermore, the editors and proof readers failed to spot problems in punctuation and style. Hopefully, these shortcomings will be corrected in a future edition.
Meanwhile, in spite of the problems, this book may be considered an essential reference for anyone interested in Teresa of Avila.
We plan to completely revise and reprint the book as soon as we're able, but we need to reduce our current inventory first. That’s why we’re offering 100 Themes to you at a really deep discount: just $3.79.
