ICS Publications garners three awards at 2016
Catholic Press Association convention
ST. LOUIS — For the third year in a row, ICS Publications has been honored with awards for excellence presented by the Catholic Press Association (CPA) of the United States and Canada. The awards were announced at the association’s annual Catholic Media Conference, held in June this year in St. Louis.
The Divine Adventure: St. Teresa of Avila’s Journeys and Foundations, released in 2015 for the 500th centenary of St. Teresa’s birth, won not one, but three awards in the books competition.
The Divine Adventure was honored in three categories: First Place: Best Coffee Table Book/Religious Art; Third Place: Best Book from a Small Publisher; and Honorable Mention: Best Design and Production.
Described as “an armchair pilgrimage” to each of St. Teresa’s foundations and other key places touched by her life and holiness, the full-color book is filled with hundreds of photographs, maps, charts and historic artwork—all interwoven with numerous excerpts from the saint’s own engaging Book of the Foundations. Written by Spanish Discalced Carmelite scholars Tomas Alvarez and Fernando Domingo, the book is introduced by Teresian expert Fr. Kieran Kavanaugh, OCD. It was translated by Christopher O’Mahony with further translation and adaptation by Patricia Lynn Morrison. The Divine Adventure was designed and typeset by Rose Design & Illustration in upstate New York. Printing was by Color House Graphics of Grand Rapids, Mich.
“With its magnificently striking color photography, this should dress up any coffee table for the curious peruser,” reads one judge’s critique. “It may even lead the casual observer to have a deeper interest in St. Teresa of Avila.” Other judges praised The Divine Adventure “as a winner for its exquisite color photography even where taken from drawings”and as a beautifully illustrated volume “providing insight into the energetic life of St. Teresa.”
The Divine Adventure was the only title among the 104 winners in the books division 30 categories to win more than one award. A panel of 17 judges, all publishing professionals, made the selections.
2016 marks the third consecutive year that ICS Publications titles have been honored for excellence by the CPA and the first time in multiple categories.
Previous winners include (all for Best Book from a Small Publisher):
- 2015: Love Awakened by Love: The Liberating Ascent of St. John of the Cross, Mark O’Keefe, OSB; 2nd place; and
- Edith Stein, Letters to Roman Ingarden, volume 12 of The Collected Works of Edith Stein, translated by Hugh Hunt; 3rd place;
- 2014: The Ascent of Mount Carmel: Reflections, Mark Foley, OCD; 2nd place.
“As a very small house, it is a great honor for ICS Publications to be among the CPA’s award winners for three consecutive years,” said ICS Publications editorial director Patricia Morrison. “Being recognized by one’s peers—especially with the immense talent in North American publishing—is always humbling and encouraging.”
“At the same time, this recognition gives us an opportunity to thank the many people behind the scenes whose skills and talents make our Carmelite publishing ministry possible, and who share our ongoing quest for excellence: our authors, translators, editors, and designers,” Morrison said. “For The Divine Adventure especially we owe particular thanks to Carol and Eric Sawyer of Rose Design & Illustration for their wonderful layout, charts and drawings, and the special attention they gave to the hundreds of photos which really make the book—and St. Teresa’s dynamic founding spirit—come alive for the 21st-century reader.”
